Oil is the lifeblood of your car's engine and, just like our kidneys and liver filter the blood in our own bodies, oil filters keep harmful contaminants from inflicting damage on the internal components of an engine. The environment inside an engine is a particularly hazardous place to be - what with all the moving mechanical parts moving at many times per second and the heat from the combustion process etc. - and for the oil to function as a lubricant and keep your engine operating in prime condition, it needs to have all harmful contaminants removed via filtration.
